What Patients Say About Us

I am so grateful to UAMS Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy (MIRT) for saving my life. I was told by another center that the type of myeloma I had was high-risk and that I would be dead within three years, even with two stem cell transplants. This prospect sent me to Little Rock for a second opinion. After evaluation at MIRT, I was told I appeared to be low-risk and was placed on "Total Therapy 6" due to my previous treatment.

I achieved complete remission following my first stem cell transplant and have remained in complete remission past the time I was told I would be dead. I really appreciated being able to receive all of my treatment at UAMS on an outpatient basis. It made it so much more bearable and was certainly much safer and healthier. There were many people who were so kind to us. I will continue my primary care at Little Rock because MIRT is at the forefront of myeloma research and treatment. You all are the best in the field. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I was diagnosed with myeloma in 2000 and after researching the disease, made my way to Little Rock and to Dr. Barlogie. I was a 33 year old mother of three small children and knew I had to fight not just for myself but for them. My youngest was 2 years old at the time and I wanted him to at least be able to remember his mother. I believe that the only reason I am alive today is because of Dr. Barlogie and his staff. I know I chose the best and brightest Multiple Myeloma Center in the world. When I come for my annual check-ups it is like coming home to a wonderful, safe place.

Five and a half years after my initial diagnosis, I was thrilled to welcome my great grandson. How did I get to experience such joy?  I owe it all to the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy (MIRT) at UAMS in Little Rock. In addition to celebrating the daily joys, I am also celebrating the 5th annual anniversary of continuous, complete remission.  Now, I fully expect to meet my first great-great-grandchild someday.

To everyone who has played a direct role in my treatment, I THANK YOU for all that you do … for me and for all others who either are, or will be, inflicted by multiple myeloma.

I have been coming to the Myeloma Institute for 22 years. They have treated thousands of patients. But every time I have been treated by the Myeloma Clinic personnel they have made me feel like I was the only patient they had. For multiple myeloma patients anywhere in the world, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy is the place to be!

I was in two hospitals in the country before UAMS, and both are ranked in the top 10 in the country. And they are phenomenal hospital systems. But as a patient, those rankings go right out the window once you are admitted. And what I found is that my experience between these three hospitals, the other two and this one, is that it’s patient care and what nurses do for you every day that matters. I owe my life to UAMS.

I have been a Multiple Myeloma patient of Dr. Barlogie for over 6 years and have truly been blessed with my treatment and care, not only by Dr. Barlogie but the entire staff of the Myeloma Institute. I have been in complete remission since September 2006 and except for some neuropathy, I am almost as good as new.

I knew I was in good hands the second I got here. Everyone here is extraordinary, from the doctors and nurses to the patient care techs and secretaries.

The myeloma was so bad when I came in. The doctors brought me from the verge of death. I haven’t felt this good in years. I truly thank them all for what they have done for me.

I am a 32 year old male. I was diagnosed with multicentric Castleman’s Disease. I have an enlarged spleen that we were worried about for some time. When we finally got the diagnosis, I didn't know what to do. My local oncologist wanted to "wait and see." This didn't sit well with my family. So at the suggestion of Dr. Frits Van Rhee, we took the trip to UAMS. What a great place. We could not believe the level of organization. These people are true saviors. My experience could not have been better. I want to tell anyone who is diagnosed and is thinking of going to UAMS, GO. You will not be disappointed. These people are the best.

One year ago today I could barely walk to the entrance to the ACRC. We travel 935 miles one way to be there. Today, I played 18 holes of golf for the third time in three weeks and yes, I was tired and my legs hurt. But, I played and plan to play next week and the week after. I beat two guys that are 25 and 35 years younger than me! I doubt that I would have played if not for the bone marrow biopsies and resulting treatment in the clinical studies.

At age 66 I did not think I had much to look forward to, but with Dr. Barlogie and others and their dedication to patient care and finding a cure for multiple myeloma, I got a new lease on life. Let me encourage you to focus on the results and the fact that the doctors, professors and scientists are dedicated to finding a cure. It is our job to stay alive with a positive, active mindset to help them and those of us now and in the future that have or will have multiple myeloma.

An investment in the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy will be an investment in my future. I have all the confidence in the world in Dr. Barlogie and his staff to cure Multiple Myeloma patients like myself.

We would like to thank everyone who had a part in Don's treatment at your facility. We started our journey in December of 1998 and our experiences there with all our chemo, stem cell collection, and two transplants was good. We are very happy our doctor at the Bruno Cancer Center in Birmingham sent us to you. We met many wonderful people along the way, some we have become close friends with.

Not only was your facility wonderful but God intervened on Don's behalf many times along the way. He is working through the medical staff of doctors and nurses to help people get well again. Thanks be to God and the ACRC.
