Dr. Yoon’s research team is investigating the pathophysiology of multiple myeloma (MM), a B cell cancer characterized by proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow, presence of a monoclonal serum immunoglobulin, and osteolytic lesions. MM studies demonstrate that the activities of osteoclasts increase while the activities of osteoblasts decrease, resulting in severe lytic bone lesions/MM progression and suggest that manipulating activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts may suppress MM. Dr. Yoon’s research team is studying the factors and mechanisms of bone metabolism in MM, which influence bone development, growth, and repair. They have previously reported a significant correlation between serum PTH levels and myeloma responses to proteasome inhibition and demonstrated a crucial role for the parathyroid hormone receptor 1 (PTHR1) in vitro and in vivo.
Dr. Yoon’s laboratory uses model systems to investigate the roles/mechanisms of the PTH axis in MM development and therapeutic agents that target this axis.
Additionally, the laboratory is exploring the role of Hypoxia (low oxygen tension) and microRNA (miRNA) in MM pathology and aims to develop miRNA/target genes in MM.
