Benefits of Our High Patient Volumes

The Myeloma Institute treats more Multiple Myeloma patients than any other cancer center in the world.  Around 70% of our patient base comes from outside of Arkansas (see the map below). The number of new Multiple Myeloma patients evaluated at the Myeloma Institute each year is over 600; we are treating/following over 3,000 patients at any given time. We do more bone marrow transplants (a treatment option for Myeloma) than any other facility in the country. With a disease as complex as Multiple Myeloma, the experience gained from a large volume of patients is a distinct advantage.  Our staff, focused on the treatment of patients with Multiple Myeloma, is thoroughly familiar with all treatment processes and the sequence of treatments, and is adept at anticipating potential complications and addressing patient/family needs.  Patients requiring hospitalization are admitted to a special inpatient unit dedicated to Multiple Myeloma patients and to patients with other hematological malignancies undergoing peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

For newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients between 1995 and 2001, the National Cancer Institute reports through its SEER program (http://seer.cancer.gov/), that 34 percent of such patients lived at least five years. At the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, for the same time period, 57 percent of our newly diagnosed patients lived five years or more.
