Clinical Trial

Title:

SWOG 0417: "A Phase II Study of Bortezomib (Velcade™, PS- 341), Thalidomide, and Dexamethasone in Patients with Refractory Multiple Myeloma"

Sponsor: Southwest Oncology Group

PI: Laura Hutchins, M.D.

Phase:  II

Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to find out how the myeloma in research participants with relapsed and resistant disease responds to treatment with bortezomib, dexamethasone, and thalidomide and to find out what the side effects of this treatment will be.

Eligibility:

An estimated 5 participants, ages 18 and older, will be entered onto this study at this institution. Overall accrual is anticipated to be 90 participants.

Treatment:

If the exams, tests and procedures show that you can be in the study, and you choose to take part, then you will need the following tests and procedures. They are part of regular cancer care:

  • Blood and urine tests to measure the amount of myeloma will be done before each cycle of treatment (about every 3 weeks)
  • Imaging scans of your bones will be done when your doctor decides they are needed
  • If you are a female of childbearing potential, you will have a pregnancy test once a week for the first 4 weeks, then once a month as long as you are taking thalidomide.
